Two men died on Monday after they were buried alive while working on the foundation of a building.

The two were among four men laying the foundation of the building next to the Village Market in Nairobi.

Witnesses claimed that the four continued to work on the site in the morning despite warnings that the ground was weak.

“They had been working there since morning even after we informed the contractor that the soil above had cracked,” said Mr Crispinas Masahalazia, a brother of one of the dead workers.

Serious injuries

One of the workers died on the spot while the other died in hospital. Two workers were admitted to MP Shah Hospital with serious injuries.
“We have been reporting these cases to the supervisor to look into the matter and ensure our safety, but nothing seems to be done,” said Mr Masahalazia.

He continued: “Today’s incident is a clear indication that our lives are at a risk owing to lack of commitment by the contractor towards ensuring that our safety is taken into consideration.”

Gigiri police said they would investigate the incident and the claims made by the workers.
