A couple has moved to court seeking to compel a school to allow students wear hijabs.

They are seeking orders requiring Kenya High School to allow their daughters to wear the head scarves to class.

The hijab is a head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women.

The students, suing through their parents, say it is their right to wear the hijab as Muslims and the decision by the school to deny them this right is illegal.

The school, the students say, is under legal duty by virtue of the Ministry of Education’s written directions on religious dressing to allow them to wear head scarves while in school.

The twelve Muslim students say they feel forced to school in an environment where they are not fully accepted.

Their parents said they have on many occasions tried to solve the issue amicably but to no avail.

They now want the court to urgently intervene and stop the infringement of their rights.
