Eight killed in fresh inter-clan fighting

Eight people were killed and three others seriously injured in fresh inter-clan clashes Friday morning in Rhamu, Mandera County.

The reason for fighting between Garre and the Degodia clans has not been established.

Mandera county commissioner Michael Tialal said hundreds of people had camped at police stations after a group of armed men attacked Bula village.

“We have asked for back up from security agents and promise to ensure peace prevails,” said Mr Tialal.

The attack was allegedly triggered by politicians.

According to a security officer who asked not to be named, hundreds of militants from neighbouring Ethiopia have been hired by Degodia to attack the Garre.

The source stated that the militia group was heavily armed with guns, improvised explosive devices, grenades and home-made bombs. The clashes have paralysed business and learning in Rhamu area of the county.

The two clans have been at loggerheads for six years.

About two months ago, clashes between the two communities left more than 50 people dead, hundreds injured and goods worth million of shillings destroyed.

Ironically, peace meetings have been taking place between elders and leaders from the two sides.
