Five people were killed in Moyale after fresh overnight clashes on Thursday between Borana and Garba clans.

Moyale DC Elias Kithura says several injured have been rushed to Moyale district hospital.

The renewed violence, which broke out in Helu on Tuesday, has now spread out to other parts of the district.

Police and Kenya military officers have been deployed to the Butiye, Gurumesa and Helu areas where the communities have been fighting since November last year albeit intermittently. (READ: Police arrest 26 suspects over Moyale, Isiolo attacks)

The violence in the area has sucked in Ethiopian foreign fighters from both communities to take part in the tribal conflict on the Kenya side.

The new round of violence fighting has disrupted transport in the area since Tuesday as authorities could not allow vehicles to leave the town since it was insecure to travel.

Last week Police in Isiolo and Moyale arrested 26 suspects, among them chiefs and civic leaders, for allegedly fanning violence in the area.

Eastern Provincial police boss Marcus Ochola said the suspects had been charged in court with incitement, murder and arson, and that some had been freed on bond.

Mr Ochola said investigations into the clashes had pointed to incitement by local leaders over the sharing of resources, land, and local politics.

Several other councillors had gone into hiding and were being sought by police to assist with investigations into the violence which led to death of tens of people.
