Former Kenya Ports Authority managing director James Mulewa will be arraigned in court Friday to answer graft charges.

Mr Mulewa was arrested by officials from the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission (Kacc) Thursday evening in Mombasa.

Kacc spokesman Nicholas Simani said Mr Mulewa will face two charges of corruption in a Mombasa court at 10 a.m.

But, by midday he was still being held at the Kacc offices and was expected in court in the afternoon.

Mr Mulewa was removed from office after allegations of impropriety were levelled against him.

Former Transport minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere wrote a letter to PS Cyrus Njiru on February 12 demanding that he either suspends or sacks Mr Mulewa for alleged corruption.

The letter stated that Mr Mulewa had allegedly "presented false information on KPA's financial position and placing huge orders for the supply of equipment without prior availability of funds".

It also alleged that the former MD had been involved in corrupt deals, unprocedural recruitment of staff and mismanagement of funds among other allegations.
