Internally displaced persons have welcomed the ruling permitting investigations into the post-election violence that rocked Kenya.

The IDPs in Limuru broke into song and dance when news broke out on Wednesday evening that the International Criminal Court (ICC) had given prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo the go-ahead to investigate the chaos.

The national chairman of the Kenya Internally Displaced Persons Association, Mr Charles Kariuki, said all victims wanted the ICC at The Hague to take over the cases.

“We are full of joy after Ocampo was granted the permission investigate our cases since we have no confidence in Kenyan courts,” Mr Kariuki said.

He said the IDPs were willing to give evidence but urged the government to protect the witnesses.

Those due to be investigated include ministers in ODM and PNU and other politicians and businessmen who organised or funded the violence which left 1,300 people dead and more than 300,000 others displaced.

The government now has no choice but to cooperate with the ICC.
