Iranians to be held in Kamiti jail

A court has ordered that two Iranians charged with terror-related offences be remanded at Kamiti Maximum Prison for security reasons.

Mr Ahmad Abolafthi Mohammad and Mr Sayed Mansour Mousav are charged with illegal possession of 15 kilogrammes of explosive materials intended to harm the public.

They were arrested in Mombasa on June 20. “ You will be remanded in a high security detention camp for your own safety and that of the nation,” ruled senior principal magistrate Paul Biwott.

Before making the remand order, the magistrate had been warned by State prosecutor Nzau Musangi that the country cannot afford to take any chances given recent terror attacks.

He asked the court to take judicial notice of the Garissa attack where 17 people died.

Defence lawyer Karathe Wandugi submitted that the Commissioner of Prisons should be charged with contempt for disregarding court orders to take the two to Nairobi Hospital.

The magistrate ordered their remand at Kamiti and said a private doctor should be allowed to visit them.

Their medical report will be tabled on July 9, when they are also expected to renew their request for bail.
