Judges vetting board assured of full support

The government will provide the resources required to ensure that the vetting of judges and magistrates is fair and meets the expectations of Kenyans, President Kibaki has said.

The President directed the Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs to facilitate smooth operations of the vetting board and assured it of his support.

He was speaking at his Harambee House office in Nairobi during a meeting with members of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board who paid him a courtesy call.

“We will accord you all the support that is required to make the process smooth and credible to meet the expectations of Kenyans,” President Kibaki said.

The vetting of judges is to determine their suitability to continue in office and is expected to start with Court of Appeal judges next week. The board is expected to complete receiving complaints against serving High Court judges on January 31 before they face it.

The board was established by the Vetting of Judges and Magistrates Act 2011 and has nine members, three of them foreign legal experts.

It includes Ghanaian Chief Justice Georgina Wood, Mr Justice Fredrick Chomba (Zambia) and Mr Justice Albie Sachs (South Africa). The chairman is Mr Sharad Rao, a retired director of prosecutions.
