Kenyan troops in Somalia have captured an Al-Shabaab women’s leader in the recently seized port town of Kismayu.

The arrest of the woman is a big boost to the soldiers’ efforts to neutralise the terror group’s plans to use women to carry out attacks.

Kenya Defence Forces information operations officer Col Cyrus Oguna on Tuesday said a house-to-house search last Sunday netted 72 suspected Al-Shabaab members.

Get the job done

The search, involving KDF and the Somalia National Army, took place a day after President Kibaki said at Mashujaa Day celebrations on Saturday that Kenya’s intention was to ensure peace in Somalia.

“Let it be known to those who seek to harm us that we will not relent in the work we have begun. We shall get the job done until we have order and security. Indeed, the gains we have made call for continued vigilance as the forces of terror will seek to fight back,” the President said.

Col Oguna also said five Al-Shabaab members were arrested on Tuesday while trying to enter Kenya near Kolbio in Eastern Province. The five engaged KDF soldiers in a fight that saw two soldiers injured.
