A soldier has died after a Kenyan Defence Forces vehicle was exploded in a landmine incident in Mandera near the Somalia border Thursday.

Four of his colleagues are nursing serious injuries in a Garissa hospital, the military said.

"On 24 November 2011 at 0700hrs, 13 KDF troops on board a service truck drove over a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while on patrol duties in the general area of Mlima Fisi in Mandera," said military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir in a statement.

"Following this incident, 5 KDF soldiers were serious injured and have been airlifted to Garissa for treatment."

Major Chirchir said one of the injured soldier "succumbed to his injuries'".

At the same time, Major Chirchir said on Wednesday that KDF had destroyed two Al-Shabaab camps in Wamaitho and Kisima near Badade town after launching airstrikes.
