Kenya bagged three awards in the first-ever Africa Magic Movie Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria on Saturday night.

NTV’s political satire TV series XYZ Show won in the Best Television Series category; Yellow Fever in the Best Short Film category; while actress Maureen Koech of KTN’s Lies That Bind won in the Best Supporting Actress category.

During their acceptance speech at Eko Hotel in Victoria Islands, Lagos, XYZ Show’s executive producers Godfrey ‘Gado’ Mwampembwa and Marie Lora Mungai, said that it was a big achievement for Kenya, especially after the recent peaceful elections.

“The award is dedicated to Kenya, especially after getting it when the country has just announced results of the presidential elections,” said Ms Mungai.

Demigods

Others nominees included Citizen TV’s Makutano Junction and NTV’s Demigods.

Most Nigerian and Ghanaian movies took the day by winning in most of the categories, as South African movies trailed.

Uganda and Tanzania won at least in a category each. Uganda’s Mathew Nabwiso won in the Best Supporting Actor in the movie A Good Catholic Girl, while Tanzania won the Best Local Language Movie (Swahili) with Ray of Hope.

The best movie award, however, went to South Africa’s Otelo Burning. The Best Actress award went to Ghana’s Jackie Appiah with her role in the movie Perfect Picture.

Nigeria’s OC Ukeje bagged the Best Actor award with his role in the movie Two Brides and a Baby. The Industry Merit Award went to veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs.

The event organised by Africa Magic and sponsored by Amstel Lager had a great line up of musicians. Legendary Nigerian artiste Femi Kuti opened the stage with an electric performance with his world popular hit Beng Beng.
