President Kibaki has ordered the police to ensure Kenyans comply with the new alcohol rules during the festive season.

He said they should "refrain from overindulgence of alcohol and allow the true spirit of Christmas to be reborn not only in their hearts, but also in their homes as well".

"Equally important, I wish to note that we have a new law in place meant to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol. The Alcohol Drinks Control Act, 2010 is being enforced at a time when there is a lot of merrymaking associated with the festive season," said the President.

President Kibaki's directive came as a group- The Embu Bar Owners Association- moved to court seeking orders restraining the police and Nacada from harassing its workers.

In his Christmas message, the Head of State noted that it is a season of rejoicing in which Christians all over the world commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

“It is an important season in which Christians celebrate the coming of God into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity.”

The President also said apart from being a period of joy, Christians are expected to re-examine their commitment to the Christian faith and re-dedicate themselves to a new and fresh relationship with God through Christ.

Urging Kenyans to also bear in mind that the spirit of Christmas season is that of peace, love and goodwill, the Head of State noted that even as Christians reflect upon their relationship with God, it is imperative for them to demonstrate the Christian values of forgiveness, reconciliation, kindness and service.

“We should strive to forgive those who have wronged us and move forward in the love of God as individuals and as a nation”, said the President.

At the same time, President Kibaki has urged all Christians to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate in their midst saying this is an old age tradition associated with the Christmas season which brings joy and brightens Christmas for those disadvantaged in the society.

Said President Kibaki, “As Christians, let us make an effort to help the less fortunate among us. Indeed, an old age tradition associated with this season is that of sharing gifts, smiles, warmth and spreading cheer.

Let us extend a helping hand, no matter how small, for this will bring joy and make Christmas brighter for the disadvantaged members of our society.”

On security during this festive season, the Head of State called upon the police to provide adequate security in all parts of the country so that Kenyans can celebrate in a secure and peaceful atmosphere.

Similarly, President Kibaki urged motorists and drivers of the public service vehicles to observe traffic regulations in order to ensure road safety during this season.
