Members of Parliament on Monday endorsed an appeal by Rwanda to hire 4,000 teachers of English from Kenya saying it would help create jobs for thousands of unemployed graduate teachers.

The chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Education, Mr David Koech, said thousands of trained teachers in Kenya were jobless and the request from Rwanda would receive blessings of his committee in Parliament.

“The House Committee on Education fully supports request by Rwanda to hire some 4,000 teachers of English from Kenya because Rwanda does not have enough trained teachers to teach in schools,” Mr Koech told teachers, parents and students at Kamonjil Secondary School in Nandi County.

Create jobs for Kenyans

He blamed the Kenyan Government for not employing enough teachers in schools faced with shortages.

He said the decision by Rwanda to import teachers is welcome since it would create jobs for Kenyans.

“Kenya has many trained teachers who are unemployed and since the government cannot employ all of them, countries within East Africa, and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa region should be encouraged to hire them,” he said.

Mr Koech who was accompanied by Emgwen MP Elijah Lagat was speaking during the opening of two new classrooms, which were funded by CDF to a tune of Sh900,000.

The MPs asked the government to ensure that the shortage of teachers in schools in the country was addressed.

Mr Koech said his committee was in agreement with Kenyan National Union of Teachers and Kenya Post Primary Teachers Union that the Teachers Service Commission employs more teachers on permanent terms.
