Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) chairman Omar Hamisi Mwamnuadzi and his wife Maimuna Hamisi were on Monday released from Shimo la Tewa prison following the approval of their sureties by the court.

The two walked out of the prison gates some minutes to 4pm and were received by Makadara MP Gideon Kioko Mbuvi who has stood surety for them and Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI) officials.

Mr Mwamnuadzi, who was grateful to the Makadara MP for securing their release, asked for their security to be guaranteed.

“We thank the MP for assisting us, what we want is peace, let the youth keep peace,” said Mr Mwamnuadzi, who together with his wife have been in custody for almost one month since they were arrested and charged.

Mr Mbuvi said he will continue with his efforts to preach peace around the country and unite youths in the country.

The Makadara MP said MRC should not withdraw their grievances against the government but should do so in a lawful manner.

The move by the MP to stand surety was as a result of signing of a “peace agreement” with the officials of the organization.

Messrs Mwamnuadzi, Mraja, and Nzai signed the pact with Mr Mbuvi that was overseen by Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI).

Mr Mwamnuadzi is charged for being in possession of a firearm and 15 rounds of ammunitions.

He is facing the charge together with his wife who was also charged for being in possession of offensive weapons.

They face two further counts of incitement to violence and being in possession of articles used in the exercise of witchcraft.

Mr Mraja, the outspoken MRC official, is facing two counts of incitement to violence.
