President Kenyatta has directed that the movement of goods from the Port of Mombasa to Malaba should take five days.

The President scheduled a meeting in three weeks’ time to assess the implementation of his order.

The Head of State said the present situation where a container takes an average of 18 days to reach Kampala from Mombasa was untenable.

At the meeting, President Kenyatta ordered the formation of a Cabinet sub-committee that will include all Cabinet Secretaries dealing with the Northern Corridor who will report to him during every Cabinet meeting on what they are doing to improve efficiency.

Top officials of ministries and government departments reported back on the progress they have made towards removing the bottlenecks in the transit of goods from Mombasa to Malaba.

They also briefed the President on the measures they intend to take in order to achieve their targets.

The meeting was attended by Deputy President William Ruto, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, Industrialisation Secretary Adan Mohamed, Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau,
Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku and Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.

Others were Inspector General David Kimaiyo and top officials of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
