Muslims on Friday converged in different parts of the country for prayers to celebrate Idd Ul Fitr.

Special Idd prayers at Mombasa municipal stadium were unique as they were led by retired Chief Kadhi Sheikh Hammad Kassim instead of the acting Chief Kadhi Sheikh Ahmed Mohdhar despite his presence.

Sheikh Kassim led the faithful in prayers and other celebrations and urged Muslims to support the implementation of the new Constitution, which protects the rights of women and children.

“There is need to promote peace and unity as we implement the new Constitution so as to achieve our goals to improve in different fields such as education,” he said.

Sheikh Kassim also asked Muslims to shun immorality.

“The end of fasting should not be the license of committing sins and I urged everybody to stay at away from the condemned foods and drinks. Our deeds should follow the Koran teachings,” said Sheikh Kassim.

Sheikh Mordhar urged Muslims to preach peace and live as a community.

“We are supposed to live as one community despite our differences of religion. We should also live by helping those in need,” he said.

Idd-ul-Fitri marks the end of Ramadhan, a month-long period of fasting and prayers. It is the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
