A former presidential candidate has sued a tycoon she says is her husband, demanding more than Sh280 million as upkeep and dowry.

Ms Nazlin Rajput Umar, who vied for the presidency in 2007, is also laying claim to properties owned by Mr Madatali Chatur, whose empire is worth billions.

Ms Umar claims in documents filed at the High Court in Nairobi that she married Mr Chatur on September 27, 2010 under Islamic Sharia law, but he has failed and refused to provide upkeep.

Failed to provide

“He has failed to provide me with love, care and support,” she says, adding that she has no access to the matrimonial homes, properties and bank accounts.

When he married her, she says, Mr Chatur took over all her liabilities and responsibilities, including all legal matters and care for her children.

She says the businessman pledged Sh250 million and a Mercedes Benz as dowry.

After the marriage, she says, she enjoyed the comfort of three matrimonial  apartments and a penthouse as a home was being sought.

She wants the court to order Mr Chatur to deposit Sh27 million in her bank account as upkeep arrears from October 2010.

Ms Umar is also seeking an order requiring Mr Chatur to deposit Sh2.2 million being her upkeep for the month of October 2011.

Mr Chatur should also be ordered to pay the Sh2.2 million every month pending hearing and determination of the case.

She wants the court to restrain him from  transferring, dispensing or interfering with 32 commercial properties.

The properties include the prestigious New Muthaiga Shopping Mall, Diamond Plaza, Diamond Plaza Annexe in Parklands, Rahimtula Trust and Mithu buildings in Moi Avenue, Shelly Beach Hotel in South Coast, Wonder Paradise Beach Resort in Diani Beach and ABC financial institution.

Ms Umar is also asking the court to stop Mr Chatur from interfering with bank accounts, deposits, shares and bonds held in partnership or through proxy, which she says are worth Sh1.5 billion.

She is also claiming part of a Sh1 billion loan, which she says Mr Chatur recently got.

High Court judge Mr Justice David Maraga certified the case urgent and fixed it for hearing on Thursday.
