People living with HIV now have an agency to rush to when their rights are violated.

The HIV and Aids Tribunal was sworn in by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga Thursday.

The tribunal was established to protect and promote the rights of those affected.

The five-member team is led by Jotham Arwa as chairman. The other members are Ms Mercy Mwarah, Mr Mohamed Noor Kullow, Mr Julius Muasya Kyambi, Ms Angelina Siparo and Mr Joel Muriuki.

Mr Arwa said the tribunal would protect the rights of people living with HIV and Aids to access treatment, drugs and information.

“The rights are currently not being fully honoured. Equality and non-discrimination should be promoted and protected,” Mr Arwa said after being sworn in.

The tribunal, he said, would be open to “everybody including those taking care of persons living with HIV and Aids.”

He said some of the cases currently in court should be moved to the tribunal, adding that the tribunal and other stakeholders would draft a law on HIV and Aids.
