Newly appointed military heads sworn in

President Mwai Kibaki on Friday witnessed the swearing-in of the new Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), his deputy and Service Commanders.

The ceremony, also witnessed by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the Minister of Defense Yusuf Haji and the outgoing CDF Gen. Jeremiah Kianga, was conducted by the Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet Amb. Francis Muthaura.

Those sworn in included CDF Gen. Julius Karangi, his deputy Lt. Gen Samson Mwathethe, Army Commander Lt. Gen Joseph Kasaon, Navy Commander Maj-Gen. Ngewa Mukala and Air Force Commander Maj. Gen J. Otieno.

Gen. Karangi replaces Gen. Kianga who retires at the end of August on completion of his tenure.

During the occasion, President Kibaki urged the senior military officers to uphold the traditional professionalism that Kenya’s defense forces are renowned for worldwide.

The President expressed confidence that the newly appointed military Generals were equal to the task as they embark on serving the nation in their new capacities.
