A police officer was shot dead by his colleagues while on patrol duty Thursday night.
Constable Koech, who was attached to Buruburu Police Station, was accompanied by a colleague when he was killed by officers from Dandora Police Station. The two were on patrol duties in Nairobi's Umoja estate.
The circumstances surrounding the officer's shooting were not immediately clear as he was in full police uniform. He was shot by plainclothes policemen.
The deceased officer’s colleague said that he was a few metres apart from his colleague near the popular Egesa Bar in Umoja. He said the deceased started running towards him.
A few minutes later, he heard a gunshot that felled his partner.
Buruburu CID boss and deputy OCPD visited the scene and the body was later removed to the City Mortuary.
The officers from Dandora are said to have been trailing a suspect in Umoja when the 10.30pm incident occurred.
Nairobi Area police boss Anthony Kibuchi said that initial investigations indicated that it was a case of mistaken identity.
“It appears to have been a case of mistaken identity and we are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” he said.
Mr Kibuchi said that the area where the officer was shot was not well lit as the street lights were not functioning.
Two weeks ago, another Administration Police officer based at the Kayole DC’s office was shot dead by his regular police counterparts after members of the public reported that he was robbing patrons leaving the Nyama Villa restaurant.
His colleagues, however, denied the allegations and said that he was killed.
