Anti-riot police on Tuesday camped outside Egerton University’s town campus for several hours after students threatened to stage a protest march following the disappearance of two of their leaders.

The students claimed their chairman, Mr Ben Ndung’u, and vice-chairman Akimami Mwangi, were arrested after a demonstration along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Monday in protest against the delay in sporting allowance.

Area police boss Johnston Ipara denied that the student leaders had been arrested. He said the leaders had gone underground for unknown reasons.

Inspect cells

“They are hiding for reasons better known to themselves because police are not interested in arresting them as they have not committed any crime.

“Unless there is another police force in Nakuru Town, I would like to assure the students that police did not arrest any student leader and anyone doubting me is free to come and inspect our cells at all the police posts and stations under my jurisdiction,” said Mr Ipara.

He addressed the students outside the administration block. They later agreed to go back to classes.
