An Administration Police officer, attached to a senior government official, has died after his vehicle was blown up by an unknown device in Nairobi's Eastleigh area.

Confirming the death, AP Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua said his colleague was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.

"Am yet to establish fully what happened. Am headed to the scene but I've been informed that one of the officers has passed away in hospital. The other officer has been admitted and was able to talk," he said.

Witnesses at the scene said the AP Landrover was in a traffic jam when someone threw what seemed like a grenade inside the driver's cabin.

The white Landrover was still at the scene an hour after the incident, with the front passenger seat ripped off, windscreen and roof destroyed.

There is an AP camp not far from the scene.
