The wife of the Nigerian envoy will be examined on Monday by a police doctor over assault claims.

Ms Tess Iyi Wigwe recorded a statement with the Diplomatic Police Unit in Gigiri after reporting that she was assaulted by her husband, Dr Wilcox Wigwe.

Dr Wigwe has since denied the allegations.

Police say the learnt of Ms Wigwe’s claims from the press.

However, the envoy could not be summoned by the police due to diplomatic immunity.

“If he volunteers to come, we will record his statement,” said a senior officer based at the Diplomatic Police Unit.

Police have the medical reports from the hospital where the woman sought medical treatment but the police surgeon is expected to examine her again and fill a P3 form on Monday.

The woman sustained serious injuries on the face. Police sources also revealed that her daughter was also injured as she was trying to intervene.

It was not clear whether the woman intends to prefer any charges.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said they had written to the ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the uplifting of Dr Wigwe’s immunity. Being a diplomat, he is not liable to any form of arrest or detention.

Nigeria may decide to recall the diplomat or have him face trial here should his diplomatic immunity be waived.
