The process of appointing members to the police commission that started on January 9 but later stopped is expected to resume on Monday.

Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia said that the interviews would take two days.

The exercise was stopped after the terms of the selection panel chairman Omar Hassan and member Okong’o Omogeni expired. (READ: Police panel puts off interviews for bosses)

Other members of the panel are Judiciary Service Commission representative Ahmednasir Abdullahi, Mr Kimemia, PM’s office representative Caroli Omondi, Mr Festus Lituku and Ms Lydia Gachoe.

The matter was referred back to the Attorney General for direction but he has not responded. Mr Hassan confirmed that he had been replaced.

Mr Kimemia did not, however, say whether the candidates had been notified of the scheduled interviews.

There was confusion on Sunday when Mr Ahmednassir said that he was also not aware of the interviews.

The panel is expected to nominated five commissioners. The interviews for the post of chairman have been completed and three names are waiting to be forwarded to the President and Prime Minister for appointment.

Ten candidates, Johnstone Kavuludi, Murshid Mohamed, Margaret Cheboiwo, Jean Kamau, Amina Masoud, Bernard Mbai, Hudda Ogoti, Byram Ongaya, Migudo Winja and Eric Bor, were interviewed for the post of chairman.

National Police Service Commission will take over the affairs of the police, including keeping under review all matters relating to standards or members qualifications.

The commission will also determine, with the advice of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, the remuneration and benefits of officers.
