Two police officers were shot and seriously injured when their vehicle was ambushed by armed men Thursday.

The vehicle belonging to the Mandera East police boss was travelling from Mandera to Garissa but on approaching Fino, the occupants were attacked by the armed men, who had laid an ambush.

The OCPD’s escort and driver were injured during the attack. The driver, Constable Miriti, was shot on the hand and lost control of the vehicle.

They were heading to Garissa to attend the handing over ceremony of the Provincial Police Officer (PPO). Last week, the North Eastern Province PPO Leo Nyongesa was transferred to the police headquarters to take charge of complaints and his place taken by Philip Tuimur.

Mr Nyongesa said that the attack by suspected bandits occurred around 9am. He said police had mounted an operation to hunt down the attackers.

“The injured officers have been rushed to Mandera District Hospital in stable condition,” he said.
