Queries as Mwau’s car sprayed with bullets

Questions are being raised about Thursday night’s spraying with bullets of a vehicle belonging to Kilome MP Harun Mwau with

none of the occupants being injured.

The Thursday night incident which happened on City Hall Way, has puzzled police investigators because six shots were fired

and only one catridge was found.

Police are also questioning how the driver escaped without injuries given the trajectory of the shots.

There was also evidence that some of the shots were fired from inside the car, according to police. The legislator’s driver and

bodyguard were not hurt.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said they were investigating the incident, adding that it was strange that neither the

bodyguard nor the driver was injured.

The two had dropped Mr Mwau at the Inter-Continental Hotel and then drove to their offices on Moi Avenue. They said that as

they were driving back to pick up the MP, gunmen overtook them just opposite Garden Square and sprayed their vehicle with

bullets.

The driver’s door had three bullet holes while the rear right door had one.

The driver’s window was shattered by bullets. One bullet exited through the co-driver’s door, leaving a wide opening.

Though at least six rounds were fired in the incident, only one bullet head of 9mm was recovered in the vehicle. This type of

calibre is mostly used in Ceska pistols, like the one his bodyguard had.

Mr Iteere said that it was strange that the two were seated in the front seat and none of them was hit by a bullet in the 10.15pm incident. “It defies all the laws we know about fired ammunition,” he said.

“In the morning, our officers went back to the scene but no spent cartridge was recovered,” said the police boss.

The MP’s driver and bodyguard were recalled to the Central Police Station to record further statements on the incident.

Preliminary investigations showed that considering the points of entries and exits of the bullets, it was not possible that one

could escape injury.

“The driver’s door window is completely shattered but no bruises sustained by the driver at all,” said Mr Iteere.

The two also reported that they lost control and hit another vehicle at the parking, slightly damaging it.

However, the legislator’s vehicle had no visible dents.

Mr Iteere said he had talked to the occupants of the vehicle that was rammed and confirmed that there was need for further

investigations.

The police boss said Mr Mwau had gone to his office last week and informed him that some suspicious vehicles had been

trailing him and he even gave the registration number of the vehicles.

Mr Iteere explained that he had forwarded the registration numbers of the vehicles to the registrar of motor vehicles and was

waiting for response.

Mr Mwau also requested that his security detail be enhanced and he be given the opportunity to choose who would be part of

the team.

“I gave him the opportunity to choose for obvious reasons and yesterday (Thursday) he brought me the list of officers he

wanted attached to his security detail,” Mr Iteere said.

The officers he suggested have been deployed to guard him.

A fortnight ago, the MP, who was named by US President Barack Obama as a significant drug kingpin, claimed that his life was

in danger and demanded State protection.

He alleged that early this month, he saw some “weird characters”, both white and black, near his office and house.
