Ruto asks teachers to resume duties as directed by court

Deputy President William Ruto on Monday pleaded with teachers to respect the Industrial court ruling that directed them to resume duties on Tuesday by 8am. Read (Court orders teachers to report back to work Tuesday)

At a press conference, Mr Ruto said the government will form a committee that will hold dialogue with the teachers concerning their demands.

"Knut leaders should be sincere and negotiate with the government," said Ruto.

"We are ready to talk with teachers and they should respect the rule of law," added Ruto. Read (Knut vows to continue with strike, ignores court orders)

Mr Ruto also said that the government has set aside funds to hire 10,000 new teachers as well as promoting some.

He also said that the government had Sh15 billion for the implementation of the class one laptop projects as opposed to Sh53 billion perpetrated by the teachers.

Mr Ruto also said that the government is in the process of digitising learning materials for both class one and two before year-end.

"The government will spend Sh15.4 billion towards electricity provision for schools" said Mr Ruto.

He further stated that the government is willing to negotiate with public servants on any pay demands as long as it is legal and constitutional.

"We are not keen on agreeing on political agreements. We want a lawful and constitutional agreement," he said.

Mr Ruto also said the Mombasa port operations will be digitised to ensure clearance period is reduced from weeks to hours.
