A parents lobby has called on President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to sack Labour minister John Munyes and Attorney General Githu Muigai over the ongoing industrial boycotts.

The Kenya National Association of Parents accused Mr Munyes of ignoring the dispute between the government and teachers' unions.

The group said that parents were bitter that the government continues to gamble with the lives of their children.

"We are asking the President and the Prime Minister to come out and crack the whip on the Labour minister and Attorney General for failing to prevent the current industrial crisis facing our country at the moment,” said the lobby secretary general Musau Ndunda Thursday.

The parents also threatened to move to court on October 4 to stop the administering of national examinations saying they could not allow their children to sit for examinations they have not adequately prepared for.

“We are organising a mammoth demonstration on September 28. We are going to use our machinery to have over 10,000 school buses come to Nairobi for Kenyans to see the parents’ anger,” said Mr Ndunda.

Dragged into disputes

The parents said that both the teachers and lecturers gave the government notices of seven days and 21 days respectively to act on their demands as provided for under the Trade Dispute Act but it failed to take appropriate measures to prevent the strikes.

The parents said that they should not be dragged into labour disputes because they are not employees of Teachers Service Commission or University Academic Staff Union.

“We shall also sue government through Labour Ministry, Education Ministry and the Teachers Service Commission for negligence which has resulted to the current stalemate,” Mr Ndunda said.

The lobby was forced to reschedule Thursday’s demonstration untill next week after parents and their children failed to turn up at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
