Public primary schools will now be re-opened on Monday after the teachers called off their strike on Wednesday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi who had ordered the indefinite closure of the schools announced the decision Friday.

"Pursuant to the statement I issued on 17 July 2013 on the indefinite closure of all public primary schools, I now announce the reopening of the said schools on Monday 22 July 2013," said Prof Kaimenyi in a statement.

He said the government will hold a meeting with education stakeholders on Tuesday to address the time lost during the 24-day strike.

"We take note with concern that the teachers’ strike disrupted learning activities for three weeks. Government will hold a key stakeholders meeting on Tuesday 23 July 2013 in order to agree on how to redress the matter expeditiously," said Prof Kaimenyi.

He said the government remains committed in ensuring that there are no "further disruptions to the school calendar and further advises that KCPE and KCSE examinations will be held on schedule".
