City Hall is now looking for alternative cemetery land. This follows a tussle over the procurement of the 120 acres in Mavoko township, whose tendering is said to have been flawed.

On Thursday, acting city planning director Patrick Odongo said although they were yet to identify a suitable plot, the process had indeed begun.

“We have already started the process of looking at how to address this matter,” Mr Odongo told the Daily Nation.

Other pitfalls

“We shall soon be discussing possible locations while addressing other pitfalls that have surrounded the initial project (in Makovo),” he added.

The chairman of the public health committee, Mr Ken Ng’ondi, also confirmed that they were looking for land. “It is in the pipeline, but we have to wait for the full council meeting first,” he said.

However, Mr Odongo could not say whether they would get fresh funding from Treasury to buy the new plot or wait for the recovery of the Sh283 million that had been fraudulently paid to some individuals.
