Taxpayers will be Sh172 million poorer after paying the salary arrears of the Prime Minister and his two deputies, if their new perks are backdated to May 2008.

Under the new terms, Prime Minister Raila Odinga will take home Sh3,246,000 in basic salary and allowances every month while his two deputies, Mr Musalia Mudavadi and Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, will earn Sh1,891,000 each.

Review

The tribunal appointed by the Parliamentary Service Commission to review the salaries and allowances of MPs has recommended that the new salaries for the three be backdated to the date they took office.

Should the PM’s salary and allowances be backdated to May 2008, he will stand to get Sh80 million while Mr Kenyatta and Mr Mudavadi will get Sh46 million each.
