Six people, including two police officers, have been killed and scores injured in yet another attack on two Administration police camps in Garissa.

A high school teacher, a senior Kenya Red Cross official, a 15-year-old boy and an unidentified civilian were the others killed in the attack that also left a local chief injured.

Heavily armed al-Shabaab militiamen are said to have attacked Damajaly and Abdi Sugow AP camps, both situated about 70km from Dadaab Town, and opened fire, killing the Administration Police officers and the Red Cross official.

The high school teacher was hacked to death in a style commonly associated to al-Shabaab sympathisers.

Three other people, including an AP officer and the local senior chief Omar Khalif, sustained serious injuries during the attack and were admitted to Kulan Health Centre.

Six other officers stationed at the two camps are still missing following the bloody Saturday attack, with their guns also unaccounted for.

Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo said a contingent of General Service Unit officers and their colleagues from the Rapid Deployment Unit responded to the attack immediately it was reported, with the Dadaab DSIC coordinating the operation.

Airlift the injured

Another team led by the Mr Kimaiyo’s two deputies Grace Kaindi and Samuel Arachi also flew to the area yesterday to assess the situation for further intervention.

“Security has been beefed up in the area and an aircraft sent to airlift the injured to Nairobi for treatment and also bring the dead bodies,” Mr Kimaiyo said.

Four bodies had been flown to Nairobi by Sunday evening.

A witness told the Nation that several hooded attackers armed with AK47 riffles stormed the two AP camps and carried out the killings before escaping with files.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. “A small unit of mujahedeen raided the Kenyan base,” the terror group tweeted.
