Makadara MP Gideon Mbuvi on Friday took his three title deeds for authentication at the Kwale land registry before they are accepted as surety for the release of Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) leaders. Read (MRC leader to be released on Sh3m bond)

The MRC officials have been in court for several weeks now since no one was willing to bail them out after the government threatened to arrest anyone sympathetic to them.

However, on Wednesday, Mr Mbuvi agreed to surrender his titles for land valued at Sh20 million to act as bond.

This was on condition that the leaders would preach peace, stop their secession calls and agree to hold talks with the government.

The court said it could release MRC chairman Omar Mwamunuazi, his wife Mwaimuna Hamisi, spokesman Rashid Mraja and secretary Randu Nzai on a Sh1 million bond but they have been unable to raise the money.

The court had earlier imposed a Sh3 million bond after the four denied charges of incitement to violence, among others.

Mr Mbuvi said he had acted not for any political gain but on humanitarian grounds. “These people are not rich, they are leading miserable lives,” he said.
