Spanish aid workers kidnapped in Kenya freed

Two Spanish aid workers kidnapped in 2011 by suspected Somalia al-Shabaab militia at the Dadaab refugee camp have been freed.

Their employer, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), confirmed their release on Thursday saying the two “are safe and healthy and keen to join their loved ones".

The agency could not reveal whether a ransom had been paid to secure their release.

“MSF wishes to thank everyone involved in securing their release. As we are still working on the return of the two girls to their homes, we ask you to respect their need for privacy at this time,” the statement said.

Serra and Thiebaut were kidnapped in 2011 by unknown assailants at the Dadaab refugee camp where the aid workers were serving Somalia refugees.

In the raid, a Kenyan driver Mohammed Borle was injured.
