The Attorney General has asked the police to prosecute those responsible for the death of two-year-old Walter Odhiambo in a suspected torture case.
The director of public prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, wrote to Criminal Investigations Department director Karanja Gatiba, asking him to “expeditiously and thoroughly investigate the circumstances” under which Walter died.
According to the letter dated March 5, Mr Tobiko’s intervention had been spurred by reservations raised by the Children’s Department that the death could be a possible case of child abuse and murder.
“The circumstances of the case require our immediate intervention for the interest of justice,” said the letter signed by deputy public prosecutions director Alice Ondieki.
The children’s department went to court last Thursday to block the burial of the two-year-old child.
Young Walter died of internal bleeding on February 23 and two hospitals have since raised questions about the nature of his injuries, prompting the Children’s Department to get involved.
