Twelve people died on Sunday evening in a bus accident in Mazeras after the driver lost control.

The bus that was travelling from Mombasa to Kinango in Kwale County rolled several times killing 12 people on the spot and leaving dozens others seriously injured.

Among those who died are a senior Veterinary officer in the ministry of Livestock and the driver of the bus.

The conductor, who was among those rushed to the Coast General Hospital, said the accident occurred at around 5.30 pm.

“The bus breaks failed and the driver could not control it. That is the last thing I saw,” he told the Nation.

At Mariakani District hospital, the Nation team saw at least 30 injured passengers arrive before they were referred to Coast General Hospital.

The driver of the bus is said to have been unfamiliar with the route as it was only the second time he had been on it.

At the Coast General Hospital, relatives rushed to check on the condition of their loved ones.

Area MP Gonzi Rai was among those present as ambulances from the hospital, NHIF and the military ferried in bodies and injured survivors.
