Tobiko plans appeal against ex-Posta boss sentence

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has criticised a fine imposed on former Postal Master General Francis Chahonyo by a Nairobi Court.

Mr Tobiko said the fine of Sh400, 000 was too lenient considering the colossal amount of Sh50 million lost by the tax payers, and his abuse of public office.

“The circumstances of this case warrants a more severe and deterrent sentence. In my view, a jail term would be a more appropriate sentence,” Mr Tobiko said.

Was found guilty

Mr Chahonyo was on Monday found guilty of abuse of office by anti-corruption magistrate Elijah Obaga who fined him Sh400,000 or 36 months jail term in default. (READ: Ex-posta boss found guilty)

The defence lawyers in the case successfully pleaded with the court to give a non–custodial sentence.

But the DPP said he was dissatisfied with the ruling and he would be moving to the High Court to seek an enhancement of the sentence.

Mr Tobiko said he had already applied for copies of the proceedings and that he would be lodging the appeal soon.
