Maranda and Maseno schools produced five top students in Nyanza, with three and two students in the top ten positions in the province respectively.

In national ranking, Maranda and Kanga managed were tops, with their candidates in the third and seventh slots respectively.

Friends School Kamusinga produced three students among the top ten in Western Province. Unlike Nyanza where no girl managed to appear among the top ten in the province, in Western three girls, two of them from Lugulu Girl’s, found their way to the top ten list in the province.

The girls, Miranyi Phanice Magoma and Andanje Maureen Betty who scored 86.8040 and 86.7127 points emerged second and eighth in the list respectively.

The other girl, Amukonyi Leslie Kathrin of Bunyore Girls scored 86.7440 points and emerged fifth in the province. The top position in Western Province went to Kibii Emmanuel Kiprop of Booker Academy. All the top students were from provincial schools.

Apart from producing the third best student nationally and being ranked fourth best nationally, Maranda Boy’s was ranked top in Kiswahili performance.

Most residents were shocked that the only national school in the province, Maseno, missed out on the national top 10 list.

Maseno which has held the mantle in the province for years was overshadowed by Maranda which produced the third best student nationally with 87.8 points and Kanga High school which produced the seventh best student nationally.

In the 2009 KCSE exams released last year, Maseno School produced the second best student nationally with over 100 students who sat the exam scoring a mean grade of A and A minus.

The results have shifted focus to the criteria for selecting provincial schools proposed for upgrading to national schools as none of those proposed in Nyanza made it to the top 10 list in the province.

Education minister Sam Ongeri said on Monday performance and opinions from stakeholders would be considered in the process.

“In elevating provincial schools to national schools, the ministry is considering performance in the proposed schools as well as the opinions which may be forwarded by concerned stakeholders,” he said.

Some of the former academic giants proposed in the province include Maranda Boys, Nyabondo High, Lwak Girls, St Joseph Rapogi, Asumbi Girls and Cardinal Otunga Boys.

Elsewhere, Master Abeta Nicholas who emerged fourth countrywide in this year’s KCSE results with a mean grade of 86.8468 has done Kisumu Boys school proud.
