Signs that a fully functional Thika Super Highway will be realised in a few months are real.
A critical section of the road was opened on Friday further easing congestion on the city’s exit northwards.
The Globe Roundabout stretch that runs from Khoja Mosque matatu terminus to Ngara was opened to motorists although it is yet to be fully marked.
Pedestrians, cyclists and motor bike riders will not be allowed to use the over pass, instead they will use the service road underground.
Signs and markings
The highway’s consulting engineers Harry Ramesh and Mwangi Gaita said, “we have opened it for use but we are yet to put up the required signs and markings. We therefore urge motorists to drive carefully.”
Matatu operators were upbeat days of the long traffic jams are almost over.
“I used the over pass today and it is smooth,” said George Kimani, a part time driver.
Mr Simon Mwangi, a regular Thika road user, however, said lack of signs would cause many accidents especially at night.
The 50-kilometre super highway is scheduled for completion this year at a total cost of Sh27 billion.

Why open a road that is not finished with no markings or signs. When will we ever learn? Finish the work to a high standard then open it. Cutting shortcuts is not the way to economic prosperity.

THE GLOBE ROUNDABOUT STRETCH THAT RUNS FROM KHOJA MOSQUE MATATU TERMINUS TO NGARA WAS OPENED TO MOTORISTS ALTHOUGH IT IS YET TO BE FULLY MARKED. A road section not fully marked should not be opened to the public for use. Allowing the practice is similar to living a loaded gun on the living room table or driving a car without a steering wheel. At this rate I am suspecting the road design plans do not even include separate sheets showing the signs and markings. To make our roads safe this practice must stop otherwise ……..
