Treasury asked for cash to hire teachers

The Teachers Service Commission is appealing to the Treasury to release more funds to employ teachers.

The commission’s chief executive officer, Mr Gabriel Lengoiboni,  admitted that there was a serious shortage of teachers in the country.

The crisis, he said, threatened to compromise education standards.

He revealed that many schools in the country were understaffed despite government employing 18,060 teachers last year on contract basis.

Due to financial constraints, the national teacher shortage stands at 25,305 in secondary schools and 35,930 in primary schools.

In a speech read on his behalf by TSC Commissioner Mr Peterson K. Muthathai during the Nakuru District Education Day at Afraha High School, Mr Lengoiboni assured teachers employed on contract basis that they would be employed on permanent basis. .

“It is a problem that we cannot deny but let me assure you that all is being done to ensure the teacher-student ratio is favourable,” he said.

He urged the boards of governors and school management committees to utilise the teachers they have on BOG basis.

“We appreciate the contribution made by various school committees to employ teachers to fill in the gaps and we urge them to ensure the standards of education do not go down,” he said in his speech.
