Two Administration Police officers were Sunday night shot dead in Garissa town.

The male officers were on patrol when they were attacked and shot from behind, AP spokesman Masoud Munyi told the Nation.

The officers were on Ngamia Road when they were ambushed.

Mr Munyi said the attackers made away with the officers’ two G3 rifles and 40 rounds of ammunition.

He added that a joint operation was launched, following the 7.30pm attack, with officers combing the area to track the attackers.

According to Mr Munyi, a Ceska pistol believed to have been used by the attackers was recovered a few metres from the scene.

Garissa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the attack is suspected to be a reaction to the defence force’s capture of Kismayu city on Friday.

Mr Mohamed urged the public to help security officers by reporting any suspicious people in the county.

Following the incident, operations in the town came to a standstill as a contingent of security personnel surrounded the area.
