Two people were last night killed at the Msambweni Shopping Centre in Kwale after armed men raided the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices, police have said.

"About six men raided the IEBC facilities killing two people, ransacked offices and stole laptops," the area OCPD Richard Mugwai told Nation. Read (IEBC offices moved to GSU staff quarters)

The armed men later proceeded to the neighbouring Yehu Microfinance premises, broke into the facility stealing laptops.

"The puzzling thing is the fact that these men did not steal the huge amount of money from the safe, which was accessible to them," said Mr Mugwai.

However, he could not immediately link the attacks to the outlawed group, Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).

IEBC Coast Regional Coordinator Ms Amina Soud said the attack was a wake-up call to the government since MRC is opposed to the general election being held in the region.

She also said it was too early to link MRC with the attacks.

However, MRC's spokesman Mr Mohamed Mraja says the group did not carry out the attacks because it is a peaceful outfit.

“I want people to stop linking everything bad with MRC. We are not a criminal gang and we do not break into offices. That was not an MRC raid,” he said.
