Police are looking for a close relative of a former nominated MP following an armed raid at her home in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The suspects attacked Ms Betty Tett’s Karen home, ransacked the house and harassed her husband and house-help.

Workers said the gangsters were driven into the compound by the young man.

But he remained in the car which had Ugandan registration as his accomplices went into the house.

One produced a pistol as the other tied Ms Tett’s husband and the house-help.

Mobile phones

A farmhand, Mr David Ondego, was also detained at gunpoint by the men who robbed them of cash and phones.

Other workers sensed something was amiss when Mr Ondego took long inside the house. They decided to check on him, only to be confronted by the armed man.

Mr Ondego said he signalled his colleagues that they were under attack. One of the workers pressed the alarm, prompting the young man in the car to drive away.

Police responded first and found the two suspects walking out of the house.

They opened fire, killing them on the spot. An American Colt revolver loaded with four bullets was found on one of the gangsters.

Lang’ata police boss Rono Bunei said only the house-help was injured in the scuffle. “We recovered all the things they had stolen from the family,” said Mr Bunei.

Mrs Tett was not at home at the time, but arrived shortly after the police.

Elsewhere, police are investigating the death of a man who was thrown from the third floor of a lodging in a Nairobi estate on Tuesday.

Mr Fredrick Gongo’s body was found in a pool of blood and his mouth was gagged with a handkerchief.

Detectives said he could have been strangled before he was thrown out of the building. The body was found outside Toro Mwega Bar and Lodging in Kariobangi North.

Relatives told police they last saw the deceased the previous day when he left home after supper.

Questioned by police

Among those questioned by police over the incident are the proprietor and bar attendants.

In another incident, a widow was burnt beyond recognition in her house in Nkuroroi location of Ewaso Kedong.

Kajiado North deputy police boss George Ouko identified the victim as Susan Wanjiku, 38.
