President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Dr Salome Wanjiku Gichura and Ms Saadia Abdi Kontoma to be members of the Teachers Service Commission.
The announcement was made in the National Assembly on Wednesday evening by Speaker Justin Muturi, who also directed the Education, Research and Technology Committee to begin vetting the nominees.
Dr Gichura is a former education attaché at the Kenya High Commission in London and has been director of Higher Education at that ministry.
Ms Kontoma is a lecturer at Kenyatta University.
Dr Gichura was ranked second and Ms Kontoma seventh on the merit list submitted by a panel which conducted the recruitment. The panel was chaired by educationist James Kamunge.
Their nomination means the position of chairperson is still vacant.
Mr Cleophas Tirop is currently the only commissioner at the TSC, which is in charge of employment, promotion, transfer and discipline of teachers.
In making the nominations, President Kenyatta heeded the Attorney-General’s advice against setting up of a new team to start recruiting a chairperson and two commissioners.
The positions have been vacant for more than seven months and there had been concerns that decisions made by the TSC could easily be challenged as the Constitution requires at least three commissioners be in office.
