Varsity offers to assemble laptops for pupils

A public university has offered to assemble laptops for primary schools.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology vice-chancellor Mabel Imbuga on Thursday said they had put up a computer project known as ‘Madaraka Computer Initiative’ that can assemble the gadgets.

The Information ministry-funded project seeks to assemble affordable computers for the public.

Technological skills

“The university has resident technological know-how and would seek to partner with giants like Microsoft and Samsung to make this dream of locally assembled laptops a reality in the shortest time possible,” Prof Imbuga said.

She said JKUAT would provide technical support to users of the locally assembled laptops and assist teachers on how to use them.

President Uhuru Kenyatta committed to provide solar-powered laptops to Standard One learners from next year in the Jubilee manifesto.

The university also plans to handle electronic waste to minimise environmental damage from computers.
