Woman in husband battery saga appears in court

A woman accused of slashing her husband on the head with a panga last week is expected to be charged with attempted murder before a Mukurweini court on Tuesday.

Ms Julia Wairimu Mwangi, 26, appeared before Mukurweini Resident Magistrate Margaret Murage on Monday, but did not take formal plea.

The case was adjourned to Tuesday for mention before Principal Magistrate F. M. Kombo’s court.

“The charge facing the accused is that of attempted murder. Due to the nature of this charge, the matter will be mentioned tomorrow (Tuesday) for further directions before the principal magistrate who is away in Nyeri for a meeting at the law courts,” said Ms Murage.

Residents of Mukurweini thronged the court to catch a glimpse of the accused woman, with police orderlies having a hard time controlling the crowd.

With the courtroom packed to capacity, many were forced to follow the proceedings by looking in through the widows.

Ms Wairimu was arrested on Saturday in Karatina town following several days of police efforts to trace her.

She is alleged to have attacked her 40-year-old husband, Mr Simon Kiguta, as he slept after he came home drunk last week on Monday night. (READ: Husband lucky to be alive after panga attack, allegedly by wife)

He was injured on the face and head and was rushed to the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

Meanwhile, a garage operator was fined Ksh100,000 or in default serve a year in jail by a Nyeri court after admitting to charges of stealing metal bridge rails worth Ksh 66,770 in order to sell them as scrap metal.

Isaiah Njau Muthoni admitted the theft of six metal pipes each six meters long at the bridge on the Kimathi-Nyaribo road which is under construction. They were the property of Guzman Construction Company which is undertaking the road repairs.
