A man was shot on Friday in a fracas that involved East African Portland Cement Company workers and supporters of MD Kephar Tande.

The MD who arrived after Assistant Minister Wavinya Ndeti had left the company premises wanted to serve the workers with a court order allowing him to work.

Over 2,000 protesting workers had completely blocked the gates and denied Mr Tande entry when police shot in the air to scare the crowd away but in vain.

A security officer allied to Mr Tande snatched a gun from one of the policemen and shot a worker in the arm. The injured man was rushed to a hospital.

The scene remained chaotic as the EAPCC workers burnt down two vehicles belonging to the supporters of the MD and swore never to allow the MD into the premises.

Workers had been demonstrating since Tuesday against the suspended board of directors blaming them for corruption, tribalism and oppression of workers. (READ: Directors of cement firm win back jobs)

The workers also asked the government to come out clean on whether the company had been privatised.
