Al Shabaab militias yesterday confiscated miraa from traders and burnt it in the town of Beled-weyne, north of Mogadishu.

The militias accused the traders of selling the herb inside the town in contravention of an earlier order requiring them to sell it at a site allocated to them outside the town.

A trader said that most of the affected traders were women. “Consumers cannot reach the out-of-town post,” the trader said, adding “we have to bring it to them.”

Radical Islamists in southern and central Somalia tend to restrict the sale and consumption of miraa, which is imported from Kenya and Ethiopia.

Mvkuku, what about miraa got you so upset? I am sure you have your own problems you can understand better and solve. Miraa is not a problem. The countries that have banned it are the problem. I hope you are not asking Miru farmers to take lessons from Al Shabaab.

This herb called miraaa should be made extinct from the face of the earth. It has been banned by most countries and alshabab should follow suit.Meru farmers should be taught to make an alternative use for their land than planting drugs
