ABUJA, Tuesday

Guinea, the tiny West African country embroiled in leadership crisis, has said it is ready for elections in June this year.

The country’s ambassador to Nigeria Cheick Abdoul Camara disclosed this in Abuja on Monday, saying that the election would be free and fair.

Preparations for the presidential election in the troubled country has been postponed many times in the aftermath of the 2008 military coup.

Mr Camara told reporters that preparations are on schedule for the landmark elections.

“Preparations for the June 27 elections have reached advanced stage and the government is doing everything to ensure a free and fair elections,” he assured.

He praised the efforts and the push by the country’s interim leader, General Sekouba Konate, to ensure the elections are conducted accordingly.

The envoy said the Independent Electoral Commission has commenced the registration of eligible voters and updating of the list of prospective voters both in and outside Guinea. (Xinhua)
