What you need to know:

  • I don’t know cousin or tribe or whatever, all what I want is development, he says

BANJUL, Wednesday

President Yahya Jammeh, during a three-day retreat recently held at his village, Kanilai warned civil servants against using their positions to derail government progress and national development.

The Gambian leader said he would not accept any ‘‘diabolical’’ groups or camps that are bent on undermining the development of the country.

Mr Jammeh stated that it is not his wish to always dismiss people, adding that he would not have mercy for anyone who goes to the extreme.

He said turning The Gambia into an economic superpower cannot be possible without attitudinal change.

The retreat provides the platform for officials to take stock of government achievements among other developments over the years, and on the newly-launched Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE).

“I don’t know my cousin or tribe or whatever, all what I know is development-oriented Gambians and nothing else,” he told a gathering senior civil servants at the Kanilai retreat.

He said there will be no compromise in this new five-year term on lackadaisical attitude, and will not tolerate clubs or clans in his government at any level.
